Class Day "B14" at sea

Today is class meeting day "B14."

On the agenda for me is the following:

  • Sit in on the Global Studies core course that the entire ship "shuts down for" daily - it is held in the Student Union area of the ship with the lecture being broadcast on the closed-circuit TV system of the ship to the various satellite classrooms on the ship for those students who can't fit in the Union (Time:  0920 - 1040)
  • Teach "Cinema and National Identity" (Time:  1415 - 1530)
  • Logistical Pre-Port Briefing for Malaysia (Time:  2000 - 2100)

Update:

I find it amusing that when I told my class today that I was sick and still feel like shit (and that's why I still haven't graded their midterms), a handful of them giggle at hearing me say the word shit.  I guess it's the "status" of me being their professor that makes it giggle-worthy, but I just think it's funny nonetheless that it would elicit such a response.  At any rate, so yeah, still feeling like shit.  Tee hee.  No more diarrhea and throwing up - the Cipro seemed to help with that - but still feeling generally tired and like I have the remnants of a cold or something.  I decided not to go on the Kuala Lumpur as I was originally going to do because I know I will still be run down and I don't want to sabotage myself for the other longer trips that are coming up (the trip to 3-day trip to Cambodia and the 4-day trip to Beijing - trips that cost more money and that I can't afford to miss if I am worn down).  I also think I will have a lot more fun just going out with my friends from the ship than I would going on a Semester at Sea trip with students who will apparently have a lot of free time in the schedule once in Kuala Lumpur.  The first day in Malaysia (tomorrow), I will go on a city orientation tour and a welcome reception and then for the remaining three days, I will play it by ear and see who is around.  I ran into Micah (the photographer) and Theresa (Micah's wife) the other day and they said that when they, Matt (the IT guy) and Emily (the nurse) went on their Agra/Delhi/Varanasi trip they broke off from the group of students for a little while and ended up having a much better time in doing so.   Again, by and large the students are good - but it only takes a handful of really loud, rude jerks to ruin it for me.  I am still furious about that kid that showed up drunk on our India trip.  You'd think that maybe in Malaysia students won't have as much access to alcohol since it's a Muslim country, but I am confident in their ability to seek it out no matter how sparse.

We will advance our clocks by one hour tonight which will make us 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the U.S.
