Class Day "A9" at sea

Today is class meeting day "A9."

On the agenda for me is the following:

  • Teach "Mass Media Systems Around the World" (Time:  0800 - 0915)
  • Sit in on the Global Studies core course that the entire ship "shuts down for" daily - it is held in the Student Union area of the ship with the lecture being broadcast on the closed-circuit TV system of the ship to the various satellite classrooms on the ship for those students who can't fit in the Union (Time:  0920 - 1040)
  • Teach "Intercultural Communication" (Time:  1045 - 1200)
  • Sea Social #4 (Time: 2100 - 2230)

Update:

Each of the student residence halls on the ship is called a "sea" - each "sea" has what is called a Sea Social over the course of the voyage.  This essentially means they hold a party in the faculty/staff lounge and all of the faculty and staff are invited (the theme of the sea social tonight was pirates so that's why the photos I just uploaded have people wearing eye patches and holding swords).

I have gone to the second and third sea socials in the past (basically I just sit with other faculty and staff) and apparently after some of them, some of the staff who live in converted crew cabins on the third deck sometimes have "after parties" following a sea social.  Their cabins are basically at the very front of the ship and the staff has come to call the area where they are housed the "Dalit Village" (ie. a reference to Untouchable villages in India that are extremely undesirable places to live).  At the sea social, the staff people I was hanging out with said there was going to be a party down in the village so I should come down.  I headed down there and hung out for a little while - basically everyone crams into someone's small cabin and people have bottles of rum, vodka, soda, etc.  Kristen (the assistant field office coordinator) had her 25th birthday today and Matt (one of the residence hall people) was turning 23 tomorrow so I guess that was the impetus for the party.

Essentially, these parties are just a haven for staff people (and some faculty) because students aren't allowed to bring on their own alcohol.  I guess I am one of the few faculty members who has really been able to bridge the gap and be friendly with both staff people (primarily because most of them are around my age range) and faculty.

Some of the people in the photos are as follows:
  • Shannon (John Paul, the AV coordinator's wife, age 28) - dark hair, dark purple tank top
  • John Paul (the AV coordinator, age 28) - dark hair, red bandana on head
  • Kristen (assistant field office coordinator, just turned 25) - long blonde hair, light purple shirt
  • Jonathan (video editor, age 24?) - gray shirt, with the harmonica in one photo
  • Joe (videographer, age 32) - dark hair, black shirt, bandana on head
  • Mark (Global Nomads Group director, age 34) - blonde hair, navy shirt
  • Matt (a residence hall person, just turned 23) - shaved head, tall, navy shirt
  • Joanna (Global Nomads Group editor, age 23) - dark hair, bandana on head, white shirt
  • Lesley (a residence hall person, age 26) - blonde hair, white shirt
