Today is class meeting day "A8."
On the agenda for me is the following:
- Teach "Mass Media Systems Around the World" (Time: 0800 - 0915)
- Sit in on the Global Studies core course that the entire ship "shuts down for" daily - it is held in the Student Union area of the ship with the lecture being broadcast on the closed-circuit TV system of the ship to the various satellite classrooms on the ship for those students who can't fit in the Union (Time: 0920 - 1040)
- Teach "Intercultural Communication" (Time: 1045 - 1200)
- Meeting for people on overnight trips in South Africa (Time: 1800)
- Logistical Pre-Port Briefing for South Africa (Time: 2000 - 2100)
Update:
I wrangled Mark (the half German, half American guy from the Global Nomads Group) to come speak to my "Mass Media Systems Around the World" class so students could learn more about what they do and it also selfishly gave me a day to not have to worry about what I was going to talk about. Mark showed the promo piece that they use for fundraisers (the voiceover is done by Michael Douglas who has become a big supporter of the group in terms of attending their fundraisers, etc.) Students asked questions and I told them that I was trying to coordinate a time when those who were interested could tag along to watch one of the broadcasts. In speaking to Mark later, we decided that next Wednesday would be a good time so I just got done putting notes on my students' doors to tell them when and where we would be going if they wanted to come along.
After that class this morning, I let the class out early because we are in one of the rooms that is off of the Union (it's actually IN the Union and the crew assembles and dismantles panels that make for separate classrooms at the back of the Union). People were already in the Union when our class started at 8:00 am - they were in the front row already making sure they had a good seat for Desmond Tutu's second talk in Global Studies at 9:20 am. Yesterday students were encouraged to drop off questions in a drop box that they wanted to ask him and then a panel of people sorted through the questions and asked him some of them today.
Below is the transcript of what Desmond Tutu spoke about in Global Studies today:
